How to keep up with your health?
Just like how you would keep up on the maintenance of your car, it is important to keep up with your yearly health check-ups.  You may feel you do not have to go to the doctor because you feel “fine”, but it is very important to have a doctor examine you at least once a year.  Some of the diseases are not immediately evident, so just because you have not been sick in 10 years does not mean you should not visit a physician.  Medicine has advanced dramatically in the last 20-30 years, resulting in more efficient care.  By discovering a disease early, we maybe able to treat you with medications and prevent the advancement of the disease.

What can you do for early detection of a disease?
It is important to keep up with your health.  This means to come in for a yearly physical, which sometime require some imaging studies or blood tests.  Blood tests are useful as it is a relatively non-invasive way to obtain cells, and extracellular fluid (plasma), from the body to check the status of the body.  Having annual blood tests will help our doctors recognize certain disease process at its early stage and may help prevent the disease from causing severe harm to your body.

What are some of the preventative measures in medicine?
For example, you should have your cholesterol checked at least once in your 20’s. This will give us your baseline numbers. When you turn 40, you should have your prostate checked once per year. Another example is that everyone after the age of 50 should have a colonoscopy at least one time for preventative measures.

What are the advantages of these preventative measures?
By checking and managing the cholesterol early in life, it prevents atherosclerotic disease to progress.  Having high cholesterol numbers does not mean you have to definitely be on cholesterol medications.  Some people do fine with modifying their lifestyle, such as change in their diet, or weight loss via exercise.  By checking the prostate at an early age, we will be able to prevent prostate cancer.  Remember, prostate enlarges with age, so by the time you are in your 80’s, you may also have an enlarged prostate.  What the doctor is checking for is the texture of the prostate.  If the doctor notices that the prostate is enlarged or notices hardness/nodules of the prostate, they will order a blood test called PSA to measure the likelihood of the prostate being cancerous.
