• First of all, what is the purpose of a vasectomy?
It is a male sterilization procedure in which the tube called the vas deferens, hence the name VASectomy, is cut in order to prevent the male from impregnating their female counterpart.

  • Why get a vasectomy?
Men decide to get this procedure to prevent having any more kids or having any kids at all.

  • Is this the safe procedure?
Yes, this procedure is much safer compared to a tubal ligation.  When this procedure is performed by a well qualified physician, failure rate is less than 1/1000.  This rate is much lower compared to the rate of complication with a tubal ligation.

  • How is Vasectomy performed?
The objective is to palpate the vas in the scrotum, make an incision to expose the vas, then clamp both ends of the vas, then cut or laser the vas.

  • What do we do at Falls Family Practice?
At our office, Dr. McLaughlin performs this procedure weekly.  He will see you for an initial consultation, and then will schedule an appointment for the procedure.  We have a brand new State-of-the-Art Laser machine, which Dr. McLaughlin uses to cut the vas.  We have used the laser technique with great success.  Compared to the non-laser technique, we have noticed less swelling and decreased pain post operation.  Dr. McLaughlin is one of the pioneers in using the laser technique for vasectomy.

  • What is considered a failure with this procedure?
Failure is when you have unprotected sex with your female counterpart which results in impregnation of the female.

  • What is the most common reason for failure?
The failure occurs not because the procedure was incomplete, but more likely due to the fact that there were still some sperm left over BEFORE the vasectomy.

  • How long until I get OFFICIALLY sterile?
It usually takes around 20 ejaculations or about 12 weeks post-operatively.

  • Am I safe to have unprotected sex after this time?
To be sure, we usually order a sperm count to make sure of your sterility. When your sperm count is zero, then you are completely sterile.
